From the personal wartime papers of Dr. Theodore. A. LaFar of Charleston, South Carolina (born 14 October 1831 in Charleston and died 28 December 1912 in Chattachoochee, Florida and buried in the French Protestant Huguenot Cemetery in Charleston).
A Google search reveals the 1890 proceedings of the South Carolina legislature that accepted four South Carolina Confederate Battle Flags from Dr. LaFar on December 22, 1890 . According to the minutes of the Legislature, LaFar had fled Richmond on April 2, 1865 and taken the flags with him. The Legislature recognized and summarized his service as Director of the South Carolina Hospital Bureau ("SCHB"). Duties of the SCHB included "forwarding packages to soldiers in the field, establishing state hospitals, aiding prisoners in the hands of the enemy, receive the wounded after battle and to 'succor' a South Carolina soldier wherever found."
This is a letter--marked "Copy" at the top that is lined-through in blue.
I believe this was the copy of the letter that was sent to Dr. LaFar. The letter's writers sent the original to--probably--the medical bureau of the Confederate Government and sent this copy to Dr. LaFar. He mounted his (this) copy on paper that was then mounted on 19th century ruled paper. I believe there is nothing on the reverse. I believe it has been slightly reduced. There are two file folds and small portions missing at the edges of the original letter.
Jackson Hospital was located "in the western suburbs beyond Hollywood Cemetery." It was bounded by the present City streets of Idlewood Avenue on the north, Jacquelin Street on the south, Allen Avenue in the west, and Lombardy Street in the east. A common military road (present Allen Avenue) joined it with Winder Hospital.
Jackson Hospital was opened on June 29 1863 "midway between Camp Lee and Winder." It had 40 acres of gardens and an excellent library and 49 buildings.
The original capacity was 1980, but it was reported to have been enlarged to, or able to handle, 2500. On May 9, 1864 it was reported to be "filled with North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia troops from battles" in northern Virginia.
Jackson Hospital was named for General Thomas J. Jackson.
Jackson Hospital furnished three companies of African American Confederate troops from amongst employees. They served "in the lines under fire" and had " a public drill in the Capitol Square" along with those from Winder Hospital. Their company commanders were: Captains A. Lockett, W. M. Baxley, and T. R. Calvin, in March 1865.
Jackson Hospital was used by Federal occupation forces until September 30, 1865 for Confederate prisoners.
Text as follows:
Head Quarters Jackson Hospital
Nov 1st 1864
We would respectfully state that Dr. Lafar of the
South Carolina Hospital Bureau has rendered
service to the sick and wounded at this Hosp'l
through his Bureau so promptly and so appropriately
that it is impossible for us to express the advantage
and comforts given the patients by his timely care.
For a great many articles we are at times almost
entirely dependent on this Bureau it being impossible
to procure them in any other and we believe a number
of lives have been saved in this Hospital by his
timely administration of these articles.
